Let’s cut to the chase: these are Japan Self-Defense Force Sunglasses (or JSDF for short – we ♥ acronyms here in JHYPE) and, apparently, they’re officially endorsed by Japan’s armed forces.

Each lens boasts the ability to withstand an impact from an object up to 6.55mm (0.3in) traveling at 171km/h (or 106mph). Of course, those specs probably won’t mean much against a 9mm bullet speeding toward your eye at over 1,000 miles per hour, but that’s more of a concern for the JSDF than it is for us regular folks.

According to their makers, the JSDF sunglasses won’t even shatter if a 500g shaft of iron is dropped on them from 1.27m (that’s a pretty specific number, so you know 1.28m must be a different story)! How one would get into a situation like that, I have no idea … but it sounds impressive nonetheless.

These JSDF shades can also withstand multiple blows from all the dollar bills that will be flying out of your wallet ~ and we are talking lots of bills here.

The Japan Self-Defense Force Sunglasses specs (you see what I did there):

  • Size: 16 x 15 x 4cm (6.3 x 5.9 x 1.6″)
  • Lens thickness: 2mm (0.08″)
  • Weight: 27-35g
  • Frames made of TPR/TR90
  • Comes with a case bearing the emblem of the JSDF

You can buy the JSDF at Japan Trend Shop for about $USD 317.

Right, they withstand a 500g shaft of iron dropped from 1.27m … but what about a bum dropped from … oh, say half a metre or so? Because really, we all know your glasses are far more at risk of being sat on than of having mystery-shaft-of-iron dropped from 1.27m!
