We love Japan, and this is where we show it. From gadgets to toys, live-action to anime, hillsides to cities and cars to architecture, JHYPE loves it all.

Shazai – a visual guide to apologising in Japan

July 23rd, 2010 | Author: andy | Filed under: Culture, Japanophiles, LOL, Video | No Comments »

The video provides techniques and tips for the entire spectrum of bows, from the commonplace shallow bow (for casual apologies) to the various forms of ojigi (for serious apologies) — including the long ojigi (used when apologizing to the public for a scandal or product recall) and the perpetual ojigi (to express determination). Also explained is the kneeling bow (used predominantly by ninjas), the grovelling dogeza bow (used when you are unequivocally in the wrong, such as when “caught red-handed in an orgy of evil”), the momentous doge-fuse bow (for the ultimate apology), and the doge-umari bow (the final straw).

Enjoy the weekend! (^_^)

Shinkansen ver.2 from daihei shibata on Vimeo.

A friend of ours found this captivating video of one man’s Shinkansen journey from Osaka to Tokyo.
The creative twist he put into the video makes this Jhype worthy.  Have a good weekend, Jhypers.

King Of Famicom: The Fighting Game That Never Was

May 8th, 2010 | Author: van | Filed under: Gaming, Video | 1 Comment »

If this game were real, I suspect they’d never bother to make another fighting game ever. Not even sequels to this one, let alone completely different titles. I mean, how the heck could you top this?

Titled King of Famicom – a take on the King of Fighters game – this video posits what we might have seen if the likes of Nintendo, Capcom, Irem, Sunsoft, Hudson, Taito, Namco, Konami and Sega had teamed up to give us the ultimate 8-bit fighting game.

Some of the kills are hilarious, particularly Link getting his ass beat by an opponent in the middle of push-ups and hand-stands.

Note: Famicom was the Japanese-market name for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Japanese Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

April 26th, 2010 | Author: andy | Filed under: Bizarre, Culture, Video | 1 Comment »

If you break down the formula of any successful Japanese anime, you essentially have the following (in no particular order):

1. Swords and/or Supernatural powers
2. Robots
3. Even bigger robots
4. Catchy opening and ending song
5. Transformation of some sorts
6. Boobs

So what do you do when the Japanese got hold of the license to remake/revise the ever popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That’s right, they added some giant robots, super powers and take this shit to the next level. It’s like they said “Pizza loving mutated turtles that studied ninjutsu with a rat in the sewers? That’s not good enough! We need more dragons! A Phoenix armour! A crab turtle thing! A homage to the white power ranger turtle! Shredder that transforms into a mecha dragon! Flying turtles!”

So as the subtitle in the video says “What you see here is the result”. It may be heartbreaking for the TMNT purists, but you gotta admit that it’s strangely appealing.

Miterudake For Lady

Ladies, are you overly shy? Can’t get up the nerve to talk to that cute guy in your building? Hurtin’ bad after a break-up? If so, order Miterudake For Lady a self-help DVD that helps shy women gain (or regain) their social savvy.

“Miterudake” means “only looking” in Japanese and that’s just what this curious and kinda creepy DVD is all about: 51 young men staring into the camera lens for about a minute each, ending with a quick smile and a reassuring phrase.

Who would watch such a thing, you might ask? According to Avex, the manufacturer, Miterudake For Lady is aimed at the woman whose “heart was almost broken at love and interpersonal relationships.” Obviously chocolate and ice-cream do not work in Japan.

More after the jump. Including Miterudake for Men! (you know you want it, boys).

Gyaruru - Natsuko Sone (centre)

You may be wondering why a group of nubile young Japanese Pop (J-Pop) stars make it to Jhype. Rest assured Jhype is still the place to be for all things worth hyping about from Japan. To be specific, we are only interested in one person in the group, Natsuko “Gal” Sone, or better known as Gal Sone.

Sone is known  for her bleached chestnut hair, high-pitched staccato voice, thick makeup and girlie fashion, which make her a thoroughly trendy Tokyo “gal.” So what makes her “Jhype” special you may ask?

Let’s see, the fact that she can eat 6KG (no typo, it’s kilograms) OF CURRY SOBA IN 23 MINUTES. Or eat 10 plates of bacon and cheese pasta, 10 plates of gyoza (a staggering amount of 50 dumplings) and 10 plates 0f sushi (a mind blowing 100 pieces of sushi) against a group of 11 (ELEVEN!) people. More after the jump.
